MY STORY

"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process
is the bravest thing that we will ever do."  - Brene Brown

I celebrate my first and second language through storytelling - fiction, news, spoken word poetry and blogging. I’m of Salvadorian and Honduran descent. I speak English and Spanish. I started writing in my childhood as a form of expression and as a way of coping with the trauma I endured. During that time I dove my nose into many books, including the poetry of Shel Silverstein and my parents’ World Book Encyclopedia collection. I would read for hours outside of our tiny Los Angeles apartment and paint with the dollar store paints and brushes my mother would buy for me. Then, I would create my own books with printing paper and a stapler.

While I have kept many of those hand-crafted books, I have since then traded them for a career as a multi-skilled content writer. I am grateful for the experiences I have gained over the years and to be able to share my story with you. At the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications, I was one of 24 students in the country selected to be a New York Times Fellow in Tucson. There, I worked as the copy editor, managing the editorial quality of the publication and worked closely with other young journalists and writers and editors from The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Since then, I have reported for newspapers in Arizona on a wide range of topics— fashion, business, lifestyle features, government, public education, crime and breaking news. In addition to news reporting, I have worked in public relations and communications — assisting with the production of newscast, press releases, digital and social media content in both English and Spanish at Chicanos Por La Causa, one of the largest Hispanic nonprofits in the country; Provided creative services to some of the country’s most trusted nonprofit brands, including Make-A-Wish America; In 2019, while a grad student, I developed and executed global communications and marketing strategies for STAYFREE® and JOHNSON'S® Baby consumer brands with colleagues across the U.S. and in India during my internship at Johnson & Johnson in New Brunswick, NJ.

In addition to communications, I advocated on behalf of victims of homelessness, domestic violence and sexual assault around issues such as safe housing, lay legal, case management and mental health acting as a liaison and providing comprehensive case management.

While my roles have been different, my passion for humanity has grown tremendously, leading me to volunteer my time at local food banks and orphanages abroad. My hope is that I can tell true stories as an act for intervention and social transformation, beginning with mine. I love sharing my journey as a survivor and a single mother and advocating for positive change. I would love to see more children around the world experiencing a life of quality.
